Although many residents of Clay, Platte and Jackson counties have health insurance coverage and reliable access to care, many others do not. As a result, area hospital emergency departments have seen tremendous growth in the number of patients seeking medical care, sometimes even for non-emergencies. This illustrates the lack of sufficient resources for the uninsured, as well as the lack of awareness of the resources available. The majority of these patients are working people who cannot afford or are not offered insurance by their employers and are ineligible for government-sponsored health programs.
